My Little Ray of Sunshine

August 22, 2012

Last week we headed south for our first vacation as a family. Although I was excited to get away, traveling with an almost-nine month old was enough to keep me up for the few nights preceding our vacation.

The first day of the trip did not exactly go real well. To begin, we were running late to the airport. We essentially walked right on to the plane without any time to spare. The airline had forgot to give me part of little A’s boarding ticket so just as I was about to pass through security with A (my shoes were on the security belt, etc.), I was paged across the loudspeaker to return to the ticket counter. Awesome! So little A and I trekked back through the airport to retrieve documentation we supposedly needed to get through security!?!?  (yes we were already through security) After about 20 extra minutes, we were finally through security and boarded the plane. I was so disappointed to see that our airline only does family boarding between the A boarding group and B boarding group. What happened to families board first?? Ugh! The hubby and I squeezed ourselves into a window and middle seat next to this sweet woman who graciously encouraged us to sit by her. I couldn’t believe the rude looks people gave me as I was walking through the aisles looking for a seat.  You could tell they were just praying I would pick a different seat. I hope I was never that visibly rude to parents pre-children! Anyways, little A was a trooper on the plane. He only slept for about 20 minutes but really didn’t cry or fuss either. The hardest part was just entertaining him in such a small space. But we survived!

When we landed, it was absolutely down pouring. Not exactly the weather I was hoping to see when we got off the plane. The hard rain made it very hard for the hubby to drive but we eventually made it to the hotel safe and sound. When we arrived at the hotel, let’s just say it wasn’t exactly like it looked in the pictures. Now I am the first to admit I am super high maintenance when it come to hotels. I am a germ-a-phobe anyways and hotels just gross me out. That combined with the fact that I stupidly watched a dateline NBC many years ago about hotel rooms. BAD IDEA! Anyhow, I hate almost all hotels and travel with lots of anti-bacterial wipes, my own pillow case, etc. Let’s just say that this hotel didn’t come close to meeting my high standards. I immediately started to tense up when we pulled in. Yes my head was beginning to pound at this point in the day.

The hubby dropped little A and I off at the entrance to the hotel so I could go check in while he parked the car and gathered our luggage. As soon as I went to the counter, the hotel asked for my identification. I immediately realized that I had lost my drivers license during the course of our travels. You know how you just know things sometimes? This was one of those occasions. I knew instantly that my drivers license was lost. Wholly  crap. Could the day get much worse? We went up to our hotel room with little A to get him fed and ready for bed. It was getting close to his bed time. The room was basically what I expected based on the outside.  It was yucky.  Although the website made the rooms sound extremely spacious and comfortable (which is one of the reasons we decided to book with this hotel – we knew we would need the extra space with A), let’s just say it was a little misleading. By the time little A’s metal jail-cell-looking crib was rolled in, there was pretty much no room for us to walk around. Awesome.

So just when I was about to have a nervous breakdown and start crying, I set little A on the bed to play for a minute. He immediately started kicking, laughing and playing just like we always do together at home. He looked at me with those “let’s play mommy” eyes as he began kicking his little legs a hundred miles an hour while he smiled joyfully. As I watched his little face light up, I couldn’t help but smile.  In a matter of 5 seconds this special little boy completely transformed by mood and reminded me of all the blessings I have in my life. At that moment I realized what true happiness really is – my special little boy and wonderful husband – not all the other “stuff” that so frequently preoccupies my thoughts and steals my contentment. Ah, this is definitely where my happy begins.

You may be wondering how the rest of our vacation went. It ended up wonderful. We switched hotels the next day to something that was much nicer and better suited our needs with little A. I never found my driver’s license but I had no problem getting through security on my return flight. Little A was an angel the entire trip. He loved the ocean, the pool, eating out, and just exploring. All in all it was a fantastic first family vacation that we will remember forever. Here are a few of our favorite memories.

Thanks for reading. Have a wonderful day. ~Kara
