Pinspiration: Yarn Wrapped Letter

August 17, 2012

It all started a few months ago when I spotted this monogram wreath on pinterest:

I really liked it and knew I wanted to recreate it someday.

Well that someday recently came when I was browsing through the clearance rack at JoAnne Fabrics and found this yarn for $1.50.

I thought the color would look nice on our built-in bookshelves in our living room. With my new yarn in hand, I decided to also grab a wooden letter to wrap my yarn around per the inspiration piece above. It was very easy to do – I just super glued the yarn on the back of the letter to begin and wrapped the yarn trying to keep my rows as straight and consistent as possible. It took me about two nights to complete.

I also made these little felt flowers to attach to the letter to look like the inspiration piece. They were super simple to make. Here’s what you do.

First take a piece of felt (I obviously used black felt) and cut out a small circle.

Don’t worry, the circle doesn’t need to be even.  You can trim the felt later if something is sticking out. Next start by cutting a slit in the side of your felt circle.

Keep cutting around the felt until you are left with this:

You want a little circle at the end of your cutting like you see in the picture above. Next take the non-circle end where you first made your cut (the one on the left side of the above picture) and start rolling it up to make the flower. The circle part in the center is what you will hot glue the rest of your flower to. You may need to do a little trimming here to get it just the way you want it.

Then you just hot glue your flowers on to the yarn letter. I made three little felt flowers for my letter.

I think it looks pretty good on its new home on our bookshelves.

What do you think? I think these would be fun little baby gifts for a nursery so I may do some more experimenting soon with smaller letters and different colored yarn. The wooden letter cost $3.00 so the whole project was less than $5.00. My kind of project!

Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend!
