Dining Room Refresher

August 3, 2012

We are nearing the end of our recent dining room make-over so I thought it would be fun to show you what we have done to the room so far.

The dining room was not one of our top priorities when we first moved into our home.  The pink and blue living room occupied most of our time in the beginning…

…followed by our lovely 1970s main hall bathroom after that.

But with those big projects behind us (as well as several smaller ones), we decided it was time to tackle the dining room. While it wasn’t completely awful before,

the floral wallpaper, gaudy curtains, brass chandelier and dated carpet wasn’t really our style either.

After stripping the wallpaper (never a fun project), we decided to tear out the old carpet and put in a Brazilian cherry hardwood floor. I absolutely love this floor and one day hope to install it in our entire downstairs (this is also in the family room we did – see picture above).  Fortunately for us my husband is very handy and was able to install the floor himself, costing us only the materials. Score!

We [my husband actually – I just direct the process 🙂 ] also installed a chair rail to give the room some architectural detail that was entirely lacking before. We decided to paint the bottom a darker grey and the top a lighter. I love the way the colors look next to the white chair rail.

And as much as I am going to miss this lovely brass chandelier,

we also switched that out for something a little more modern.

Ready to see what we have done so far?  Here is what the dining room looks like now.

And remember by little homemade art project from here? I am loving the way the canvases look in the room. The pop of yellow really helps break up the grey.

Oh, and see that white vase on the table? I found that a few weeks ago at TJ max for $2.50!

I didn’t love the color though so I spray painted it white.

Much better, right?

We still have a few things left to do in the room, like finding or making a big piece of art for the large wall as well as updating our furniture someday soon (the table and wine rack are k-mart finds from 5+ years ago). But for the time being we are really happy with how it looks.

So what do you think of our changes? Do you miss the chandelier as much as I do?

Thanks for reading. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Wow Kara, I am seriously impressed! I love love love the curtains in the dining room. The whole room ties together really well- great job on the floors and chair rail Nate! My parents had the same awesome chandelier at their house- gotta love the 90s!

Thanks! I love the curtains too. They were exactly what I was looking for. I am so lucky to have the hubby do everything himself. It saves us so much money. Yeah the chandelier was probably expensive back in the day but definitely needed to be updated!

Looks great – well done! I’m a huge fan of gray and yellow. I’ve been wanting to redo our living room in that color palette.

Love the new light fixture and the art work. It makes me want to do home projects bad…but we are trying to sell our house so I’m holding off. I might go overboard by the time we move into a new home. Yikes.

I completely understand what you mean. It was such a struggle for us too when we were living in our apartment. I can’t wait to see what you do though when you get into your new home! Keep me posted 🙂
